WHAT’S IN YOUR HAIR?

Our skin grows hair everywhere on our bodies except the soles of our feet and the palm of our hands, bellybuttons, and eyelids. A protein called keratin makes our hair, which is produced in the outer layer of skin in hair follicles. The hair growth process happens when old cells are pushed out from the skin’s surface by new hair cells produced by the hair follicles. Normally, hair grows at a rate of six inches per year.

The hair strand consists of a string made up of dead keratin cells. The number of hair strands in the scalp of an adult is about 150,000 hairs. Every day, we lose about 50 to 100 hair strands per day. Our scalps grow about 90% of the hair at any one time. Several factors can influence the hair follicle's growth cycle, and each follicle maintains its life cycle. Factors that affect hair growth include diseases, age, genetics, hormones, and more. The hair’s growth cycle happens in three phases:

Phase-I
Anagen

This happens between two to eight years, and it involves the active growth of hair.

Phase-II
Catagen

This phase occurs in two to three weeks, and it is the transitional phase of hair growth

Phase-III
Telogen

The telogen phase in the growth cycle involves the hair resting, and growth doesn’t occur for two to three months. Once the three months are over, the hair will shed out, and it’s going to be replaced with new hair. After that, the growth cycle will start once again.

Note: The hair’s growth rate slows down as we age

HAIR LOSS: SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

What Are The Signs of Hair Loss?

Hair thinning especially happens at the crown of the head. Hair loss signs happen differently for different people. It also happens differently in men, women, and children.

MEN’S SIGNS OF HAIR LOSS MAY INCLUDE:

    • Receding hairline
    • Horseshoe-shaped crown pattern, which exposes the head’s crown
    • Thinning hair on the scalp

WOMEN’S SIGNS OF HAIR LOSS MAY INCLUDE:

    • Hair loss in women doesn’t particularly follow a particular pattern. However, most women may experience overall thinning or widening of the part.

CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS SIGNS OF HAIR LOSS MAY INCLUDE:

    • Hair loss that happens in patches
    • Severe loss of hair but not complete baldness due to stress, medication, illness, anemia, or rapid hair loss
    • Incomplete hair loss or patches of broken hairs on the eyebrows or the scalp
    • Loss of all hair on the entire body

Three Signs Of Hair Loss

1. WIDENING PART

This usually happens in women as the first sign of hair loss, and it involves a widening part. You may notice that your scalp will start showing when the hair starts thinning.

2. EXCESS SHEDDING

Normally, we usually shed 50 to 100 hair strands per day in good health. You may be suffering from some form of hair loss if you start losing more than a hundred strands of hair per day. If you notice this, it is high time to seek help from a hair specialist or a dermatologist.

3. RECEDING AT THE HAIRLINE AND TEMPLES

When men suffer from hair loss, they will experience receding hairlines. On the other hand, women will notice receding hair around the temple. The hair around the temple or hairline will be shorter when hair loss starts. This is known as hair miniaturization. Hair generated by an inactive hair follicle will become thinner. This will happen until the hair follicle becomes dormant and stops producing new hair.

THE SCIENCE OF HAIR - YOUR HAIR’S GROWTH CYCLE

The scalp of an average man has about 100,000-150,000 hair strands. Where are those hair strands found now? On the pillow, floor, hairbrush, or shower drain. But is it supposed to be this way? As part of the hair growth cycle, an average person will shed about 50-100 hairs a day. Understanding hair loss and how it relates to the hair’s growth cycle begins by understanding the anatomy and biology of hair.
